Q & A with fatburn.com's Experts

Q:    Hi, First thanks for you advice. I was wondering if while walking on a treadmill on an incline if I were to lift small hand weights (heavy hand workout) would this be considered circuit training? Is there a danger if your goal is to see weight loss on the scale to start lifting weights? I have been told that muscle weighs more than fat and so you may be losing fat but gaining weight and then get discouraged. So again if this is my fear should I hold off on any weight training until I meet my goal? Also I am a Dentist should I list my activities as unassigned just so I am working from a worse case scenario or do you have a better activity setting. I have not seen a good definition on defining what activity level I shold be at. Thanks Fred

A:    Lifting weights while walking on the treadmill is not considered circuit training.

Weight training is great and building muscle does helps you look and feel better. Also, the more muscle you have, the more calories your body burns so we don't recommend you give up weight training. Now, if you want to get rid of the fat that is covering those muscles up, you need to also exercise aerobically. Read the featured article, "The Fastest Way to Burn Calories While Exercising" for information.

As far as your workday activity level, if you spend most of your day standing, that is considered "light" activity. Otherwise, enter "Sedentary.”

A:    Congratulations on your achievement! As you have probably already discovered, there is no magic formula. If you burn more calories than you consume, you will lose weight. How much weight is up to you. If you burn an average of 500 calories a day MORE than you consume, you will lose a pound a week.

Q:    I just had a baby 2 months ago and i lost most of my baby weight but i still have 20lbs left to get to where i was before i got pregnant and i just can't loose the weight but i would also like to loose more. I would like to loose 15 more lbs on top of the 20 i have left. I exercise every other day for 30-45 min. I do weights, stationary bike, stair climber and also the treadmill. What am i doing wrong or am i on the right path to loosing the weight?
Asked By Jody
A:    Congratulations on the addition to your family! Many women have successfully lost their "baby weight" by using fatburn.com (see the Success Stories for inspiration). It sounds like you are on the right path. Here's the truth about weight loss: In order to lose one pound you need to burn 3500 calories; to lose one pound a week, you need to burn 500 calories more than you consume EVERY DAY. fatburn.com can help because when you enter the foods you eat and the exercise you perform, fatburn.com will show you how many calories you are really burning and consuming everyday. fatburn.com recommends you consult with your doctor to ensure that the program you embark upon is healthy for you and your baby. If you are nursing, you should eat at least 1500 calories per day. We recently added "nursing" to our activities page to account for the extra calories you burn.
